The main surgical treatment option for severe arthritis is a hip replacement. A hip replacement, when done well, is considered one of the best operations ever invented. Often it results in significantly improved quality of life, and some of the happiest orthopaedic patients are ones that have undergone this operation.

Sporting injuries can cause soft tissue injuries in the hip, including cartilage and labral tears. Often hip injuries can be treated without surgery, but sometimes surgery is indicated.

The hip can be damaged from trauma and accidents. In older patients with osteoporosis, a fractured hip can be devastating. This condition almost always requires and operation, either to fix the fracture, or take out the broken parts and replace the hip.
